Jeffrey Rex Bertelsen’s New Year’s Speech: ”Goodbye 2012”

Hello,

It is today the one year anniversary of my first ever New Year’s Speech, and I’d like this speech to be a longstanding tradition on my main blog, ”I’m Jeffrey Rex”. Last year I mentioned how I dedicated 2011 to Democracy, and this year I have another dedication to make; but I’ll get to it later onward. Sport has been a huge part of my life, this year as well as basically every year of my existence. And this year, well, it topped a lot of what I’ve experienced in my lifetime. Though I’m currently saddened by the fact that my Chicago Bears were officially ruled out of the NFL Playoffs yesterday, I must try to at least look at the positives of this year; ’cause there were a few – and one topped them all.

It has nothing to do w/ the NFL, NBA or even Danish soccer. It does, however, have something to do w/ the team I’ve supported longer than any other, my Chelsea Football Club. The British “soccer” club made it all the way to the Champions League Final, and finally we captured our first European Championship, mainly due to heroic performances from Petr Cech and Didier Drogba. It all happened on the 19th of May 2012, but, as I was to find out soon enough – it was all down hill from thereon out. And as it turned out, it wasn’t only in my sporting life the walls were crumbling down, my life was falling apart – nothing would be as I had hoped.

Chelsea went from Champions of Europe, perhaps the best team in the world, to losing in all their 3 cup-finals after the Champions League success, FC København narrowly lost the Danish Superliga to FC Nordsjælland and finally Chicago Bears stumbled on the pavement of the regular season, and they never really got up from that. But long before this new disappointment, I completely crumbled. I had graduated from Odsherreds Gymnasium w/ a decent, or rather above average, Grade Point Average; so I was all set to apply for Law School at The University of Copenhagen – I felt glad when looking towards my new life. I was going to study Law, and later become a Lawyer or an Advocate, but alas, it was not to be. The accepted GPA increased, and I was sinking like a stone toward the bottom of the abyss – I didn’t get in. I was broken… Broken hearted and without faith I kept on sinking, it felt like my life was over. My big dream was shattered. Yet another hope broken, destroyed. I’d like to say I came out in the next round, and rolled with the punches – but then I’d be lying. I was lost, I felt alone. And I fell, fell into the despair that is the Shabbat Year.

So here I am, recharging my batteries – getting ready for a new round of fights at either the University of Copenhagen or the South Danish University, studying something that has to do with English or American Studies. My life hasn’t gotten easier, but I’ve moved on – and I’m getting ready to shut the door on 2012. But before I do that I have to dedicate this year to something, and I won’t be selfish; it really doesn’t have anything to do with me at all.

I was getting ready to look back on a year where a huge political election took place, when something awful happened in Connecticut. A man, only a year older than me, took the life of his own mother, six adult staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and 20 children. Just writing that gives me chills. It was sickening, and never have I felt something this hard to bear. Maybe it’s me getting older, or perhaps it is indeed the severity of this singular shooting. I don’t know, but I did cry for those victims – and I prayed. I turned to God, and begged him to help the victims and their families. I’m not taking anything away from any other Shootings – cause they all inflict pain, but this felt different. It was pure evil, as stated elsewhere on probably a billion blogs around the world.

Without saying too much, I can say I don’t agree with what the NRA proposed on the 21st of December, not entirely. It must be controlled, yes, but we can’t let this level of fear spread into these classrooms. So, this year is dedicated to the victims of all mass shootings, and may we never forget the horror that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School – only then can we improve our society.

I believe this was the sixth school shooting in the US this year, and that is simply outrageous. We simply have to correct this, to fix it. I really hope that everyone will be safe in the New Year, and that we in one year won’t remember new horrors.

I would like to leave you with these words, that are entirely my own:
We must always remember that we are not defined by our losses, but by our will to keep on fighting for this world - and perfecting it day by day.

Thank you, and have a Happy New Year,

- I am Jeffrey Rex…

First Power Ranking (Pre-WK 7)

For the first time on this blog, I’ll release a Power Ranking – a new one should come each week. Please sound off in the comments if you differ from my opinions.

1. Atlanta Falcons (6-0)
- Their perfect record doesn’t say everything, however, Matty Ice could be on his way to the MVP-title. This team is awesome, but they’ll fall soon; because they simply start too slow. Only up here because of their record and the Offense.

2. Chicago Bears (4-1)
- Yeah, I know what you’re going to think: “I only put them here, because I love my team” – and while I do love Da Bears, I do actually think they’re as good as I say they are. They got a reality-check versus The Packers, but they’ve woken up, and Matt Forté is back. I expect huge things for this team, and heck who knows – in a couple of weeks this team could be 7-1.

3. NY Giants (4-2)
- I believe in Eli! And I believe in this team… Thus far! They need to be consistent, or the ‘Skins will catch up.

4. Baltimore Ravens (5-1)
- I love this team, and I expect them to win this week, and the coming weeks ahead. They’ve lost Ray Lewis & Webb, but I still believe the defensive-spine is salvageable.

5. Green Bay Packers (3-3)
- The Pack is Back. Unfortunately, they seem to be back where they were last year. I still hope the Texans just are bad, and the 6 TDs for Rodgers was overkill, and that it doesn’t reflect their true level of play. They meet the Rams this week, a game they should win – however, if they lose; all hell will break loose. Especially if the Bears go 5-1, this week.

6. SF 49’ers (4-2)
- Disappointed me this week, but I expect them to get back on track sooner rather than later.

7. Houston Texans (5-1)
- They went from being Numero Uno on my unreleased Power Ranking last week, to falling down 6 spots. They deserve this, massively disappointed. The Pack should’ve been 2-4, disappointed in you Houston!

8. Seattle Seahawks (4-2)
- Great defense and a great home field, but until they beat a great team, away from home, they’ll stay here.

9. Minnesota Vikings (4-2)
- Yes, I know they lost to the ‘Skins. But I still believe the game would have been different in Minnesota. Not a great team, but definitely not a bad one either.

10. Washington Redskins (3-3)
- Who’d have thought it? Regardless, with the Shanahans RGIII has taken this team far – and I expect them to really challenge for the NFC East-Crown. Don’t let me down.

11. Denver Broncos (3-3)
- Peyton put you here, get a little bit better and you’ll win this division. Hey, no more Tebow! Wuhu!

12. New England Patriots (3-3)
- Regardless of what Sherman says, you don’t doubt Tom Brady. He’s simply one of the best out there.

13. San Diego Chargers (3-3)
- Rivers is extrovert, but to loud. But, I’m a Cutler-fan and I thus shouldn’t preach. This team could go far, but I fear Norv Turner has to be let go for this to happen.

14. St. Louis Rams (3-3)
- I like this team, and they’re headed in the right direction. Jeff Fisher can take this team far, Super Bowl within 5 years, if he’s here that long. Yes, I just said that.

15. Miami Dolphins (3-3)
- I started out really liking Ryan Tannehill, but feared we had another Gabbert on our hands, however, he’s been consistent – and I like where this team is headed.

16. Buffalo Bills (3-3)
- Could end up surprising some teams if Mario Williams gets better soon. We’re all waiting for another long playoff-run.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3)
- They should be better, and they probably are better. Get your mindset straight and win games, for crying out loud!

18. NY Jets (3-3)
- They can’t walk the walk w/ Rex as their Guardian. Disappointed in Mark Sanchez, they manage to defeat the Colts, which is fine but you’ll have to be more consistent.

19. Indianapolis Colts (2-3)
- I really really like Andrew Luck, and I’m going to root for him every week. I like this team, and hopefully they’ll gain more momentum w/ the ‘Chuckstrong’ campaign. You lost to a poor team, show us you’re better than them.

20. Detroit Lions (2-3)
- I just don’t like this team. I don’t like how they play, they’re inconsistent – and I definitely don’t like their attitude. This team is cocky, and they’ve got no reason to be that. They are the poorest team in the NFC North, but then again – that’s a strong division.

21. Philadelphia Eagles (3-3)
- Andy Reid didn’t put you here, Mike Vick did. He’s been horrible, just horrible – and extremely disappointing. When comparing him to QBs like him, he just isn’t safe enough. Get better or start Nick Foles.

22. Arizona Cardinals (4-2)
- Disappointed with what they’ve done since their amazing start, they’ve lost what made them special and interesting. Go for Barkley or Geno Smith, you’re going to need them if you want to get anything out of Larry Fitzgerald.

23. Cincinnati Bengals (3-3)
- A decent team, amazing potential. This team could blow up if the Ravens fall in the coming weeks, this division is suddenly wide open. I’m rooting for you this season.

24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3)
- I expected more than what you’ve shown so far, but all is not lost. The NFC is strong this year, and I believe you would’ve fared better in the AFC this season.

25. New Orleans Saints (1-4)
- I love Drew Brees’ story, I hate Bounty-Gate… I despise it; but I hope Drew gets back on track sooner rather than later.

26. Tennessee Titans (2-4)
- I really like this team on paper, but I’ve lost all faith in CJzeroK; and the win against Pittsburgh only gets you this much credit.

27. Dallas Cowboys (2-3)
- I just don’t see you as a good enough team to win the big games, and if you don’t take down Carolina this week, people are laughing at you – don’t disappoint this week; or you won’t get back up in a long long time. I may be harsh here, but you deserve to be set in the right mindset.

28. Carolina Panthers (1-4)
- Have you lost it, Cam? It’s kind off like if you were on the cover of Madden. I don’t want to say you’re the next Vince Young, but I fear you’re headed in that direction. I expected big things from you this year… Now, please don’t turn out to be another Young-story; that’d break a lot of NFL-hearts.

29. Oakland Raiders (1-4)
- Carson Palmer is not poor, but the team is. I’m sorry Raider-Nation, I love McFadden, but I don’t like your team this year.

30. Cleveland Browns (1-5).
- They’re getting to a place where they fit in, but, when all is said and done Weeden & Richardson can be really really good in a couple of years, if Weeden lasts that long.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4).
- Horrible, just horrible. You’ve got potential, but unfortunately potential doesn’t equal immediate production. Good luck Gabbert, you’re going to need it.

32. Kansas City Chiefs (1-5).
- When your only win in 6 games is away from home, and your home fans cheer at your Starting QB getting concussed; something’s wrong. I’d start Brady Quinn this week, simply because I have no faith, what-so-ever, in Matt Cassel. Regarding Quinn, I liked this kid in College… In College…

NFL Week 3 Predictions

The Third week is about to start, so in this post you'll see my predictions. In the next one, you'll hear an update on my Predictions so far!

-->
New York Giants @ Carolina Panthers
Winner: New York Giants.
- Last week I learned that I shouldn’t doubt Eli Manning. Therefore I’ll be picking the Giants to defeat this team, even though it’s in Carolina.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys
Winner: Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- I have a good feeling about the Bucs, and I believe Coach Schiano will bring the Cowboys on their knees, and Dallas will go 1-2. Don’t be surprised if Jason Garrett doesn’t last the year.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Indianapolis Colts
Winner: Indianapolis Colts.
- The Jags will have a tough season, and I firmly believe Andrew Luck can get another win in front of his fans. I love to see MJD and I like Gabbert, but I don’t see them being successful against Chuck Pagano’s Colts.

Buffalo Bills @ Cleveland Browns
Winner: Cleveland Browns.
- This is a really tough match to predict, I’m not quite sure where any of these teams are at. All I know is that Weeden was good last week, and so was Trent Richardson. With all that having been said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see C.J. Spiller run amok.

New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins
Winner: New York Jets.
- Miami just won, but I don’t see them winning again. This game means a whole lot for Sanchez & Rex Ryan. It’s a statement game. Where are they at? I’m not quite sure. This game will tell us if Tannehill is good enough; and if Sanchez should be the 1st string QB.

Kansas City Chiefs @ New Orleans Saints
Winner: New Orleans Saints.
- The Saints have been horrendous, or at least, they’ve been below par. You expect more of them, but in the long run they can’t count on only Drew Brees’ arm. However, they meet a team in disarray, so they should win.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Washington Redskins
Winner: Cincinnati Bengals.
- This’ll be tough. I like the Redskins and I like the Bengals. But then again, it’s a rookie at home against a sophomore QB with A.J. Green. It’s tough, but I’m gonna go with the greatest rookie QB so far, Robert Griffin the 3rd. This could come back to bite me, however.

St. Louis Rams @ Chicago Bears
Winner: Chicago Bears.
- My team is at home, and we have something to prove. Are they as good as they were against the Colts, or as bad as they were against the Packers. In this game we’ll find out. Jay Cutler should have a good game, if he doesn’t get destroyed by Chris Long, or get intercepted by Cortland Finnegan. I’ve always liked Sam Bradford, and he’ll have a good game – but he’ll lose this one.

San Francisco 49ers @ Minnesota Vikings
Winner: San Francisco 49ers.
- The Niners are the best team in the NFC, the Vikings are among the worst… This tells the story. I only have one question, can Adrian Peterson run against this D?

Detroit Lions @ Tennessee Titans
Winner: Detroit Lions.
- The Titans are not playing well. I’m really disappointed. Come on Locker, I want you to win –but It’ll be almost impossible! Surprise me please.

Atlanta Falcons @ San Diego Chargers
Winner: Atlanta Falcons.
- The Chargers are 2-0, but they are not that good. However, the Falcons are. Mike Nolan’s defence will destroy Rivers’ offense. And the future MVP, Matt Ryan, will get another win on his way to win the division.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Arizona Cardinals
Winner: Philadelphia Eagles.
- Are they good enough? Vick will probably throw more INTs, but they’ll still win. That’s how I see it. But wouldn’t it be great if Kevin Kolb led the Cards to a win against Philly?

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Oakland Raiders
Winner: Pittsburgh Steelers.
- The Oakland Raiders will lose again, are they on their way to 0-16? I hope not, but it looks as though they’re going down.

Houston Texans @ Denver Broncos
Winner: Houston Texans.
- Tough game for Manning, and he’ll have to go through a loss at home against the best team in the AFC.

New England Patriots @ Baltimore Ravens
Winner: Baltimore Ravens.
- A really good game, wherein I expect the Ravens to dominate.

Green Bay Packers @ Seattle Seahawks
Winner: Green Bay Packers.
- Tough place to get a win, but Rodgers will manage. I beg of you Pete Carroll… Surprise the world!
